二、主讲人简介:

Cristina Bacchilega is a Professor and Graduate Program Director in the English Department at theUniversity of Hawai‘i-Mānoa where she teaches fairy tales and theiradaptations, folklore and literature, and cultural studies. She has publishedthree single-authored volumes: Postmodern Fairy Tales: Gender andNarrative Strategies (1997), Legendary Hawai‘i and the Politics ofPlace: Tradition, Translation, and Tourism (2007), and Fairy TalesTransformed? Twenty-First-Century Adaptations and the Politics of Wonder. WithBryan Kamaoli Kuwada and Donatella Izzo, Bacchilega also co-edited “SustainingHawaiian Sovereignty,” a special issue of Anglistica, online journal ofinterdisciplinary studies. Her recent essays appear in collections suchas Marvelous Transformations: An Anthology of Fairy Tales and ContemporaryCritical Perspectives, Channelling Wonder: Fairy Tales on TV, TheCambridge Companion to the Fairy Tale, Fairy Tale Films Beyond Disney:International Perspectives, The Classic Fairy Tales: A Norton CriticalEdition, and the journalNarrative Culture. She is the co-editorof Marvels & Tales: Journal of Fairy-Tale Studies. Her work hasconsistently focused on approaches to gender in fairy tales and questions ofadaptation across media and cultures.

John Rieder is a Professor of English at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He is theauthor of three books: Science Fiction and the Mass Cultural GenreSystem (2017), Colonialism and the Emergence of ScienceFiction (2008), and Wordsworth's Counterrevolutionary Turn:Community, Virtue, and Vision in the 1790s (1997). He has published morethan three dozen essays and book chapters on a wide variety of topics and is aco-editor of the journal Extrapolation. He won the Science FictionResearch Association's Pioneer Award in 2011 for the best essay of 2010,"On Defining Science Fiction, or Not: Genre Theory, SF, and History” whichhas subsequently been translated into French, German, and Hungarian. Heregularly teaches courses on critical theory, nineteenth century literature,genre theory, and science fiction.

第二场讲座:

题目:“Disney FairyTales and Fairy-Tale Princesses: Changing Strategies of Adaptation andAppropriation”

主讲嘉宾:Cristina Bacchilega

内容:Discussionof how Disney studios put their signature onto classic fairy tales; how theyadapt to changing audience demands while seeking new audiences; and how theDisney princess culture is part of this process of adaptation and culturalappropriation; references to the recentMoanaandBeauty and the Beast.

题目:“Colonialism and the Emergence of Science Fiction”

主讲嘉宾:JohnRieder

内容:Thedevelopment of the genre of science fiction in France, England, and the US fromthe mid-nineteenth century to World War II is closely bound up with the historyof colonialism, the scientific discourses generated during colonial explorationand expansion, and the ideologies by which French, English, and Americanpublics understood their relation to colonialism.

内容:Versionsof this story in the past & some contemporary versions, including Disney’sMaleficentand Gaiman’sThe Sleeper and the Spindle. The focuswill be on gender.

题目:“From LiteraryStudies to Cultural Studies”.

主讲嘉宾:John Rieder

内容:Howshifting the emphasis from studying “the best” to studying “the common” haschanged the landscape of literary and cultural scholarship in the West over thelast four decades. Emphasis will be on the transformative influence of AntonioGramsci, Louis Althusser, and Raymond Williams.

   

第六场讲座:

题目:“Posthumanism”

主讲嘉宾:JohnRieder

讲座内容:Thedevelopment of cybernetics and the question of artificial intelligence raisequestions about the distinctive quality of human consciousness that receiveadded urgency from the emerging fields of Human-Animal Studies andecocriticism. This talk will focus on the career of Donna Haraway in hersuccessive concern with primate studies, cyborgs, companion species, and theAnthropocene.

题目:“LegendaryHawai‘i and the Politics of Place”

主讲嘉宾:Cristina Bacchilega

讲座内容:Discussionof traditional Hawaiian stories, their mistranslation into English afterHawai‘i’s annexation to the USA, and their contemporary resurgence.
